Yes the river knows
How long we sinned and laughed
The stones jagged and rough
Smooth slippery grey mountains
Pretend to sleep in silent defeat

She waded through shallow rains
Dragging her veil along
Broken shards strewn in the depth
Secret keepers for the knowing river
Are creatures choking alone

Yes the river knows
When tides swallow streets and children
While we run across the bridge
She stands watching the cobbles come loose
With melting clay down her cheeks
